Frequently asked questions

How do I turn Popbye on?
  1. Open Settings → Apps → Safari → Extensions. On iOS 17: Settings → Safari → Extensions.
  2. Tap Popbye — Ad Blocker and turn on Allow Extension.
  3. To block trackers too, do the same for Popbye — Tracker Blocker.

On iOS 26.2 and later, the button in Popbye opens this screen for you. When you return to the app, it shows that Popbye is on.

How can I check that Popbye works?

Open the Popbye test page in Safari. It contains test ads, pop-ups and trackers and shows how many of them Popbye removed. You can also open it from the Test Popbye button in the app.

Why do I still see ads in other apps or in the YouTube app?

iOS lets ad blockers work only in Safari. Ads inside other apps, games and the YouTube app can't be blocked by Popbye or any other App Store ad blocker. To watch YouTube with fewer ads, open youtube.com in Safari with YouTube Shield turned on.

Why do I still see an ad on a website in Safari?

Some websites serve ads from the same place as their content, and filter lists don't cover every site. In Safari, tap Share → Popbye → Site Doesn't Work to send us the site address, and we'll look into it. You can also hide the element yourself (see below).

A website doesn't work right. What do I do?

In Safari, tap Share → Popbye → Pause Popbye on This Site. The page reloads without blocking on that site only. To turn blocking back on, remove the site from Paused Sites in the Popbye app.

Tap Site Doesn't Work in the same menu to tell us about it. Popbye prepares an email with only the site address; you decide whether to send it.

How do I set up YouTube Shield?
  1. In Popbye, open YouTube Shield and follow the steps.
  2. In Settings → Apps → Safari → Extensions (on iOS 17: Settings → Safari → Extensions), tap Popbye — YouTube Shield and turn on Allow Extension.
  3. Open youtube.com in Safari, tap the page menu in the address bar, tap Popbye and allow it on youtube.com.

YouTube Shield works only on youtube.com in Safari, not in the YouTube app. It has no access to other websites. When YouTube changes how its ads work, we usually fix YouTube Shield within a day.

How do I hide something on a page?

In Safari, tap the page menu (≡) in the address bar, then Popbye → Hide an Element, and tap the part of the page you want to hide. Popbye hides it on that site from now on. This uses the Popbye extension in Safari's menu, so turn on Popbye — YouTube Shield in Safari's extension settings first. You can see and remove hidden elements in the Popbye app under Hidden Elements.

Popbye stopped working after an iOS update

iOS sometimes turns Safari extensions off after an update. Open Popbye — it checks its status and shows how to turn it back on. If you allowed notifications, Popbye also reminds you when it's off.

Can Popbye see the websites I visit?

No. Safari applies Popbye's rules itself, and content blockers have no access to the pages you open or your history. Popbye is not a VPN and doesn't route your traffic. Details are in the Privacy Policy.

I subscribed on another iPhone. How do I restore it?

Sign in with the same Apple Account, open Popbye → Settings and tap Restore Purchases.

How do I manage or cancel my subscription?

Open Settings → Apple Account → Subscriptions → Popbye. There you can change your plan or tap Cancel Subscription. You keep Popbye Pro until the end of the period you paid for.
